If you are receiving the dairy boxes supplied to our community by Feed Evansville you may be unfamiliar with the plain Greek yogurt contained in the box. Greek yogurt is thicker than traditional yogurt and has a flavor that is similar to sour cream. The slightly tangy and creamy Greek yogurt can be used in a multitude of delicious ways.
As a stand in for sour cream, Greek yogurt can be used to top baked potatoes or mixed into mashed potatoes. Try adding it to soups to create a creamy texture. Top your tacos, burritos, or nachos with this yummy condiment.
Make it sweet, Greek yogurt can be quickly transformed into a delightful breakfast or snack by adding in a bit of your sweetener of choice. Try a spoonful of honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar. Jams and jellys are also a great way to add in a bit of sweetness and kids love to swirl it in before eating. Try topping it with any fresh or frozen fruit (bananas and frozen berries are a favorite) and then a topping to give it some crunch; granola or nuts perfectly compliment this as a breakfast dish.
Create fruit dip by adding a bit of cocoa powder or cinnamon to your sweetened yogurt.
Make it savory, Greek yogurt is versatile enough to make into a crowd pleasing dip for tortilla chips or fresh veggies. Simply add in seasoning to your taste (if you can refrigerate overnight the flavors are even better). Some great combinations are paprika and garlic, dill and lemon juice, or chili powder and lime. Try adding in a bit of Creole seasoning or hot sauce for a delicious dip or as a condiment for meals.
Try using in place of mayonnaise for pasta salads for a yummy lunch or in your egg/chicken salad sandwiches.
I hope this inspires you to try plain Greek yogurt if you haven’t had the opportunity yet or is you were unsure as to what to do with it.
