Job Description

The Director of Urban Seeds position is a full-time, 40 hours per week role of representing, championing, supporting, collaborating, and fundraising on behalf of the organization’s Mission and Vision. Community leadership is anchored by a commitment to equity, inclusivity, and diversity in all community engagement, and includes participation in Healthy Communities Partnership/Promise Zone, Commission of Food Security, and sitting on the Advisory Committee for both the Value Chain Professional/Food System development and for the Market on Main. Regional leadership includes sitting on the Regional Food System Partnership cohort, the State Nutrition Action Committee, and the Indiana Nutrition Incentive Network. Additional leadership responsibilities include consistent communication with Welborn Baptist Foundation, Trinity UMC staff and leadership, Purdue Extension colleagues, the Nonprofit Excellence consultant, and numerous collaborative
community partners and agencies.

Performance evaluation indicators


  • Attends monthly board meetings and semi-annual organizational development retreats
    • Empowering the board and strengthening relationships with them, facilitating Board understanding of how to connect Mission to Outreach
    • Meet personally with each board member once per year (in person or virtually) ensuring they know how to engage relationships and know how to engage with US programs and opportunities
  • Report out at monthly Board meetings
  • Serves as ex-officio of each Board committee
  • Assist in Board development
  • Direct annual implementation of strategic plan
  • Oversee hiring of competent, quality staff and continued development of staff, in coordination with the Board of Directors.
  • Work with and manage staff, including compensation invoice approval, evaluating performance in conjunction with key partners and Board of Directors. Current staff includes:
    • Program Coordinator – 24 hour/week position responsible for facilitating the community impact programs in which Urban Seeds is currently engaged and partnering to create mission-driven programming for the future
    • Nourish, Community Food Buying Club Coordinator – 30 hours/week
    • Market on Main Manager – seasonal, beginning in early spring
    • Value Chain Professional – full time position, developing food system processes and relationships
  • Oversee annual budget and financial operations to help ensure sound fiscal position for Urban Seeds, working with Treasurer
  • Meet with Treasurer on a regular basis to provide check and balance to financial status
  • Maintain and update personnel policies and procedures, provide quarterly and annual evaluations for staff
  • Complete quarterly and annual self-evaluations in preparation for Board of Directors’ evaluation of performance
  • Set management policies and expectations
  • Establish and monitor Standard Operating Procedures
  • Represent Urban Seeds regarding contract with FNS/USDA to maintain administration of SNAP


  • Develop and implement annual fundraising pla
    • Current goal is $35,000 corporate/grant funding and $15,000 private donations per year
  • Make effective presentation/solicitations to potential donors
  • Oversee the writing of grants, proposals, and reports
  • Maintain positive relationships with existing and potential donors
  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion
  • Maintain updated fundraising records in Bloomerang donor software

COMMUNICATIONS/Community Engagement

  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization
  • Ensure that marketing of organization and programming reflect connection to Urban Seeds’ mission
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of website and associated materials
  • Oversee effective communication with stakeholders and customers
  • Work with Social Media Committee to deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand


  • Guide development of evaluation process of all programs/projects, and provide oversight
  • Monitor annual programs/projects goals and objectives
  • Develop report of program effectiveness and report to Board
  • Assist, in conjunction with the Program Coordinator, in the identification and development of new programs


  • Salary range $54,000 – $57,000 per year, dependent on experience
  • Must live in or near Evansville, IN
