Urban Seeds Education Program

Urban Seeds is dedicated to educating our community to best care for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors by choosing nourishing foods. Unless specified, the programming is appropriate for all age groups (children to adult) and will be tailored to the audience/participants. If you would like a class to include information that isn’t on this list, simply let us know and we can work to create what you are looking for. Local Food, Local Farmers

Time: One Hour

Activity: See and use local seasonal foods in a snack to share

Cost: $5 per participant, 5 participant minimum

Learn about the wide array of food grown and produced right here. Discuss the methods our farmers use to grow and produce.  See and work with examples of what foods are currently available seasonally, how to find them, and the benefits of buying local. Learn and practice important cooking skills to create a delicious snack.

Skills practiced: Cutting and preparing food. Knowing where to find local food and the benefits of buying food from local farmers.

Example snacks: cut fruit or veggies with homemade dip, salad with homemade dressing, deviled eggs.

Snack Break

Time: One Hour

Activity: Prepare and enjoy a healthy snack

Cost: $5 per participant, 5 participant minimum

Discuss the importance of healthful foods to nourish our bodies and minds. Learn simple ways to make healthful choices and how that impacts our health and wellbeing. Learn how to interpret ingredient labels and understand what they mean. Learn and practice important cooking skills to create a delicious snack for everyone to share.

Skills practiced: Cutting and preparing food. Reading and interpreting food labels. Where to seek nutritional information on items not labeled

Example snacks: Salsa with whole grain chips, hummus with cut veggies, fruit salsa, nut butter wrap, cut veggies and homemade ranch.

Simple, Nourishing Meals

Time: 60-90 minutes

Activity: Prepare an easy, nourishing meal from scratch

Cost: $5 per participant, 5 participant minimum

Discuss the importance of whole foods to nourish our bodies and minds. Compare the difference in pre-made convenience foods to homemade meals and the effect on our long-term health as well as our food budget. Talk about familiar ingredients as well as ingredients that may be new. See how easy it can be to create delicious meals that come together quickly. Learn and practice important cooking skills to create a delicious meal for everyone to share.

Skills practiced: Meal prep and preplanning. Cutting and preparing food. Comparing food ingredients and nutrition between convenience foods and homemade meals.

Example meals: Veggie chili with whole grain rice, black bean burritos, lentil soup.

Shopping and Cooking on a Budget (Teens to Adults)

Time: 60-90 Minutes

Activity: Review shopping lists and discuss food costs within a household

Cost: $5 per participant, 5 participants minimum (Veggie chili provided)

Learn about how to shop within your household budget while buying healthful foods. Compare ingredients and recipes to accommodate your food preferences.  Discuss money saving options for popular recipes – veggie chili, as an example, in replacement of traditional meat chili. Learn how preparing ingredients all at once will allow several meals to be made from those ingredients throughout the week.  Enjoy a meal together as we talk about our favorite recipes and how to make those meals cost effective.

Skills practiced: Household budget review and creating shopping lists. Comparing food costs for different meals. Meal prep and menu preparation.
